Health Risks

The effects of long-term exposure to EMF - Electro-Magnetic Fields - created by the current flowing through high-tension power transmission lines, is still in debate and very much in the air.  Most utilities will happily provide their own 'studies' showing no adverse effects whatsoever.  Of course, didn't the Asbestos industry do the same thing once?

It is not the task of this site to make judgments on this issue, only to provide appropriate information and links to information so that you can decide for yourself if sleeping near a substation or power lines is right for you.

HEALTH FACTS CONCERNING HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINES

If you are concerned about power line radiation, you are not alone.  Martin Halper, a director of the "Environmental Protection Agency" said in a Fortune Magazine article on magnetic radiation:  "In all my years of looking at chemicals, I have never seen a set of  epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we're seeing with EMF electromagnetic fields.  Clearly, there is something here."  (Fortune, Dec. 1990)

Below are quick precise points which were pulled from internet research from different studies.  This is a start to inform you of health hazards associated with Electromagnetic Fields from High Voltage Overhead Power Lines!

Due to time constraints in trying to get this information out , these are only a few of the facts.  Please research for yourself, the implications of living close to a high voltage power line or substation.  EMF is the abbreviation for Electric Magnetic Fields.

bulletA major new study found that children whose birth address was within 200 meters of an overhead power line had a 70 % increased risk of leukemia.  Appearing in the June 2005 British Medical Journal, the study concludes there is a statistical link between EMF from power lines and leukemia.  A 20% increase in leukemia was noted at 200-600 meters away.
(Study done by the Childhood Cancer Research Group at the University of Oxford.)

bulletA new UK study   similarly finds a link between power line EMF and childhood leukemia.  (Also reported by the BBC on October 30, 2004.)

bulletA study called the  Feychting/Ahlbom study included data for 500,000people over a 25 year period.  It carefully excluded other factors like socio-economic status, air pollution etc., and found an increase in childhood leukemia, lymphoma, and brain tumors.

bulletThe University of North Carolina reported a study by Loomis and Savitz where there a disturbing "doubling of the expected breast cancer rates for women exposed to EMF's  in the electrical trade.  (Microwave News, Nov/Dec 1993).

bulletMore recently, a major study linked EMF's with Alzeimer's.  Results from two studies conducted in Finland and one in Los Angeles indicate that people with a high exposure to EMF's are at least three times as  likely to develop Alzeimer's disease as those without significant exposure.  (Network News, Aug/Sep 1994).

bulletIn what is probably the largest study ever conducted on EMF exposure, researchers in Sweden announced in 1992, they had determined a dose-response relationship between exposure to EMF's from power-distribution lines and childhood leukemia.

bulletScientists in Russia have done more studies on EMF than any other country, and for decades have been reporting that electric field's cause high blood pressure, changes in white and red blood cell counts, chronic fatigue disorders, and immune system dysfunction.

bulletIn 1990, an EPA draft report recommended that EMF's be considered a Class B carcinogen.  This class included formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins, and PCB'S.  In a later watered down version, the reference to Class B was deleted, with an explanation that said the basic interaction between EM fields and biological interactions leading to cancer are not understood.  Yet, in the same report, they suggest there is a casual link between leukemia, lymphoma and cancer in children with exposure to magnetic fields from residential 60hertz distribution systems!  One must wonder how these two contrasting statements coexist in the same report.

PLEASE RESEARCH  EMF'S FOR YOURSELF.  THERE ARE LOTS OF STUDIES THAT HAVE BEEN DONE .  JUST REMEBER TO CHECK AND SEE WHO PAID FOR THE STUDY, SO THAT THE RESULTS ARE UNBIASED.  .  NONE OF THE STUDIES ABOVE WERE PAID FOR BY THE ELECTRIC COMPANIES.  MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION ABOUT EXPOSURE TO EMF'S FOR YOUR FAMILY.
