WASTE NOT WANT NOT
Following are some pictures depicting pure WASTE of energy taking place
throughout our region. Since this waste obviously takes place during the
'peak' demand time, it seems outlandish that the utilities that are complaining
of high load demand are doing nothing to 'encourage' their clients to fix the
problem. Are they simply more interested in the additional rate income?
Is THIS KIND OF WASTE the reason so many people in our communities are being
forced to sacrifice so much?
Some of the pictures are poor in quality since they were taken on a
phone-cam. However, the essence of the image should still be clear.
Check back often - this club is only bound to continue growing.

| My personal favorite store in the world. Only one pole
was on during the day, but this has been the case for over three months now.
I am sure they have some electrical supplies inside....... (2x400
watts) |
You never know when someone might drive off from a gas
station without paying, but I am sure these security lights offer an
effective deterrant. (2 x 175 watts) |
|
 |
 |
|
| We all know that trees need adequate light in order to
thrive. But is this REALLY necessary? (this is in a hotel parking lot
with 14 poles like this - all on. 28X400W = 11200 watts wasted, or 93
residential amps.) |
Who actually PAYS these electric bills, anyway? |
|
 |
 |
|
| Seeing light reflections in the hoods of cars is an
important part of increasing sales. (well, that just sounded good,
anyway...) Each fixture appears to be a 400W metal halide. All of
their poles were active. |
Even my former employer - a lighting company, no less - is
not exempt from our scornful cameras.... |
|
 |
 |
|
| I honestly do not know what to say. This was one pole
out of about 16 that were on all day long in this church parking lot. |
Never know when someone might be hiding in the bushes... |
|
 |
 |
|
| Well, if they are going to light your walls to insure proper
visibility during the day, at least they used T8 fluorescent lamps instead
of T12, thus saving about 30% energy usage. Makes me feel better
already.... |
This service station won the prize for the month - 38 175W
canopy lights on during the day, plus at least 14 250W HPS parking lot
lights. That is equivalent to 85 amps at residential voltages being
drawn for no reason at all. |

|
| High-mast fixtures like this unit in Smyrna are often used
to light large intersections. Each pole usually houses 8 fixtures,
each fixture is 1000 watts. |
Single fixtures like this burning during the day are
commonplace in the Murfreesboro and Smyrna area. They are usually due
to failed, dirty, or poorly calibrated photocells. Many utilities say
that doing such maintenance is not 'cost effective'. Since it is your
home and not theirs that will be demolished to pay for this waste, I guess
they are right, huh? |
|
 |
 |
|
| This is a different high-mast fixture in Murfreesboro.
It is heartwarming to know that our municipalities are looking out for our
safety by providing adequate lighting all day long in the event of a sudden
and unexpected solar eclipse. |
More high mast fun-in-the-sun. There is so much light
generated from these fixtures, this truck did not even have to use it's
headlights! |
